[edit] The Office of Greek Life

The Johns Hopkins University Office of Greek Life is run by the Department of Student Life and is headed by Robert Turning, a brother of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity (Akron 1996). The Office of Greek Life oversees the Fraternities and Sororities recognized by the Johns Hopkins University.

Johns Hopkins University does not provide Greek Housing to any Greek Letter Organization. None of the JHU sororities have houses. Most of the IFC fraternities have houses that they have purchased themselves within the Charles Village area. These fraternities regularly host Frat parties to which all students are invited. Students must present their Jcard, or student ID, to gain admission.

Approximately 20% of male undergraduates and 20% of female undergraduates are members of a Fraternity or Sorority. Fraternities and sororities promote academic excellence, philanthropic endeavors and loyalty to other members (often referred to as "brothers" and "sisters"). Fraternities and sororities also hold a number of members-only events every semester, such as Formals, Date Parties and other fun off-campus activities.

As of Spring 2009, there were 990 students in JHU's thirteen fraternities and seven sororities. The Greek GPA average was 3.28, above the GPA average for all JHU students.

To learn how to join a Fraternity or Sorority, see Rushing a Fraternity or Sorority.

[edit] Greek Week

Every fall, The Office of Greek Life organizes a collection of events and competitions for Greek Letter Organizations called Greek Week. The fraternity and sorority who win the most points (by attending or winning competitions) are named the winners of Greek Week. Kappa Kappa Gamma and Beta Theta Pi were the winners of Greek Week 2008. Alpha Phi was the winner of Sorority Powderpuff 2008.

Greek Week 2009 will be held October 15-17 and will include a Panhellenic Cook-Off, All-Greek Formal, fraternity Soapbox Derby, sorority Powderpuff Football, Penny Wars, an open-mic Battle of the Bands, a tailgate and a number of other all-Greek events.

[edit] The Inter-Fraternity Council

The Interfraternity Council, or "IFC" governs eleven Fraternities at Johns Hopkins:

As of Spring 2009, the all-IFC GPA average was 3.22 and there were 579 men in IFC fraternities at JHU.

Recruitment for the IFC fraternities takes place in the Spring Semester for freshman and sophomores. Some chapters run a smaller round of Recruitment during the Fall Semester for sophomores and juniors only.

[edit] The Panhellenic Council

The Panhellenic Council, often referred to as "Panhel", consists of four officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. Each position is given to a member of a different sorority for one year, after which the positions rotate and a member of a different sorority holds each one. Also on the council are delegates from each sorority.

The Panhellenic Council governs three general interest Sororities at Johns Hopkins:

As of Fall 2009, there were 286 women in the Panhellenic sororities. In Spring 2009, the all-Panhellenic GPA average, 3.36, was higher than the University GPA average, the all-Greek average and the male and female averages.

Formal Recruitment for the Panhellenic sororities takes place in the Spring Semester for freshman and sophomores, and requires that Potential New Members register with the Office of Greek Life.

[edit] The National Pan-Hellenic Council

The National Pan-Hellenic Council, or "NPHC", governs one historically African-American fraternity:

The Council also governs one historically African-American sorority:

[edit] Multicultural Greeks

The Multicultural Greek groups at Johns Hopkins include the following four Sororities:

The Multicultural Greek groups at Johns Hopkins also include one Fraternity:
