From JhuWiki
bovarvareld Your friend is studying abroad and you would like to call her. But how?
Contents |
[edit] Basics
Which country is your friend studying in? What is the country code?
What is her phone number?
[edit] Paying
Phone calls cost money. Either choose to use a phone card or use your normal long distance carrier.
[edit] Instructions
[edit] By phone card
Follow the directions given by the phone card. When the prompt asks for a country code, simply enter the country code, without any prefix. Same for the phone number.
[edit] By long distance
Dial 011 and the country code and then the phone number.
[edit] Specific countries
[edit] France
France has 10 digit phone numbers. The first two numbers is the area code. 01 is Paris, 06 is a cell phone.
France's country code is 33. When calling from the United States, drop the first digit of the phone number (01 becomes 1, 06 becomes 6).
Dial 33 plus the now 9 digit phone number.
Example: Her phone number is 01-23-45-67-89. Placing a long distance call, dial 011-33-1-23-45-67-89.
Remember France is six hours ahead.
[edit] Australia
Phone numbers in Australia are 10 digits long. Area codes are two digits long and start with 0. A number in NSW has 02, while 08 can be a huge range of places. 04 is a mobile.
Australia's country code is 61. As usual, drop the 0 in the area code (actually the long distance prefix) when dialing internationally.
Dial 61 plus the remaining 9 digits.
Example: Her phone number is (02) 1234 5678. Placing a long distance call, dial 011 61 2 1234 5678.
If you want to send text messages, use + format to indicate the country code. Keep in mind that some providers may charge seperately for international messaging.
Example: To message (04) 1234 5678, dial +61 4 1234 5678
Australia is about 15 hours ahead (think 9 hours behind).
[edit] New Zealand
In New Zealand, land-line numbers are 9 digits long, while mobile phones have 9 to 11 digits. A Northland number starts with 09, and a mobile area code is 02 plus a digit for the provider.
New Zealand's country code is 64. Drop the 0 in the area code when dialing.
Dial 64 plus the remaining 8 to 10 digits.
Example: Her phone number is (03) 353 1234. Placing a long distance call, dial 011 64 3 353 1234.
If you want to send text messages, use + format to indicate the country code. Keep in mind that some providers may charge seperately for international messaging.
Example: To message (025) 123 456, dial +64 25 123 456
The land of the long white cloud is a good 17 hours ahead of us, plan accordingly.
